The first black regiment raised for the United
States was not the 54th Mass., but the 1st South
Carolina. It was composed of nearly all field
workers, seized by the local invading Federals. It
raised in May of 1862, in the Department of the
South by General David Hunter . Originally, the
creation of the regiment failed, due to many causes,
including the fact recruits were involuntarily
inducted into the regiment in a manner suggestive of
their days as slaves.
